Unit 2: Bological Bases Of Behavior Part 2 Flashcards
Measures electrical activity of the neuron below the electrodes place on the scalp, often used to show brain wave patterns of electrical activity during sleep stages and seizures
Purpose: function
Advantage: noninvasive, on normal pattern indicate neurological disorders
Disadvantage: difficult to determine the specific brain area the electrical activity is produced
EEG
Involves the injection of small harmless amount of radioactive material, into the blood stream, indicates area of of the brain activity during cognitive tasks by tracking the specific structures using the radioactive material as fuel resulting in a color coded image
Purpose: function
Advantage: investigation of mental illness and neurological problems like Alzheimer’s and epilepsy,
Disadvantage: exposure to low levels of radioactive material, difficult to pinpoint the exact location of brain activity
PET
Temporarily creates advanced and specific x ray of the brain, th tube rotates around the body taking x rays, often used to locate timers and brain damage resulting from blood clots and strokes
Purpose: structure
Advantage: can view large abnormalities, and more sensitive than traditional x rays
Disadvantage: involves radiation, incapable of locating small brain abnormalities
CT scan (CAT)
Uses strong magnetic fields that cause different molecules to vibrate at different frequencies which produce detailed images of slices of brain tissue
Purpose: structure
Advantage: generates images of Bria structure with greater clarity than the CT scan, no exposure to radiation
Disadvantage: can’t be used on an individual with metallic implant
Individual is required to stay for an exter period of time in a confined space
MRI
Uses magnetic field to produce images of brain and tracks real time Brian activity by measuring blood flow carrying oxygen to active brain tissue
Purpose: structure and function
Advantage: no exposure to radioactive materials, allowing multiple scans on an individual, ability to pinpoint and track mental processes that occur over seconds by thinking about an object
Disadvantage: cannot be used in an individual with metallic implant
Long term exposure to powerful magnets is unknown
fMRI
Conscious level: thoughts,perceptions
Preconscious level: memories, stored knowledge
Unconscious level: feels, immoral urges, violent motives
