Regulators
A large group of North Carolina colonists (mostly those living on the western frontier) who protested the high taxes they had to pay and their lack of representation (compared to Eastern colonists) in government
Declaratory Act
An act passed right after Great Britain repealed the Stamp Act, stating that despite this, they still had power to make laws regarding the colonies in all cases
Townshend Duties
A series of taxes/duties on imported goods such as glass, lead, paint, paper, and tea. The acts were repealed (except the Tea Act) the same day as the Boston Massacre.
Led to the organized boycott of British goods, encouraged by the Sons/Daughters of Liberty and other anti-British groups
Samuel Adams
A Founding Father who led the radicals in Massachusetts and was part of the Loyal Nine / Sons of Liberty as well as founded the first Committee of Correspondence
Actual Representation
Colonial belief that they should have representatives from the colonies in Parliament
1st Continental Congress
Founded after the Intolerable/Coercive Acts; boycotted British goods but wanted to repair relations with Great Britain rather than declare independence
2nd Continental Congress
Met in May 1775 (after Lexington & Concord) and extended the olive branch petition to King George III and began assembling the Continental Army. They did not declare independence until 1776, when 5 members of the Continental Congress were entrusted to draft the Declaration of Independence.
Treaty of Paris (1783)
Declared colonies independent, extended Western border to Mississippi, called for British to leave their posts in America, and meant to end retaliatory measures against Loyalists and their property in the colonies
American domestic manufacturing
The colonies began manufacturing their own products during and after the Revolutionary War since they were no longer forced to import manufactured goods from G Britain.
Land Ordinance of 1785
A series of laws under a system that took Western land from all of the colonies and allowed farmers to purchase it.
Northwest Ordinance of 1787
One of the land ordinances that established precedent for declaring a territory a state and declared the Northwest territories free of slavery.
Battle of Fallen Timbers
Last battle between Native tribes in the Northwest and colonial troops that resulted in Native Americans signing a treaty to give up NW land.
