Unit 2 - Alcohols Flashcards
What is the general formula for alcohols?
CnH2n+1OH
Name of the functional group on alcohols
Hydroxyl (-OH)
What are the uses of alcohols?
- drink
- solvent
- fuels
Advantage of using alcohols as fuels rather than hydrocarbons?
Burn with a very clean flame - less polution - can make it from plants
What does miscible in water mean?
That can be mixed with water
What happen to the miscibibily of alcohols as they get bigger?
The miscibility decreases.
What happen to the boiling point and melting point of alcohols as the chain of carbon increases? why?
the boiling point and melting point increase. Because there is more intermolecular forces / or because there are more forces between the molecules.
What is the name of this molecule?
Heptan-2-ol
what is the name of this molecule?
hexan-3-ol
What is the name of this molecule
Ethanol
No need to put the number where the hydroxyl group is located as there is only one possibility. (not Ethan-1-ol)
Name the following molecule
5-ethyl-6-methylheptan-2-ol
Draw 3,5-dimethyloctan-3-ol
draw : 3-methylpentan-2-ol
draw methanol
