UNIT 2 : Alcohol Reactions Flashcards
What are the 3 types of alcohol?
Primary
Secondary
Tertiary
What are primary alcohols?
Ones in which the carbon attached to the hydroxyl group is attached to only one carbon atom
eg. butan-1-ol
What are secondary alcohols?
Ones in which the carbon attached to the hydroxyl group is attached to two carbon atoms
eg. propan-2-ol
What are tertiary alcohols?
Ones in which the carbon attached to the hydroxyl group is attached to three carbon atoms
eg. 3-methylpentan-3-ol
What are the 3 oxidising agents?
Acidified Potassium Dichromate
Fehling’s Solution
Tollens’ Reagent
What effect is seen when Acidified Potassium Dichromate is added to alcohol?
A change of orange dichromate ions, to blue-green chromium (III) ions
What effect is seen when Fehling’s Solution is added to alcohol?
A change of blue Cu2+ ions, to orange-red Cu+ ions
What effect is seen when Tollens’ Reagent is added to alcohol?
A change of Ag+ ions to Ag solid (solid silver) ions which make a shiny coating on the inside of the boiling tube
What type of reaction is the reaction of oxidising agents and alcohol?
Reduction
Which oxidising agent gives the “Silver Mirror Test”?
Tollens’ Reagent
What is produced on the oxidation of a primary alcohol?
An aldehyde
Which alcohol can undergo further oxidation?
Primary
What is produced on the further oxidation of a primary alcohol?
A carboxylic acid
What is produced on the oxidation of a secondary alcohol?
A ketone
What is the functional group of a ketone?
Carbonyl Group in the middle of a carbon chain, not the end
R1 | C = O | R2
