Define: Culture
Culture consists of: -abstract values -beliefs, -perceptions of the world that lie behind people's behavior, and which are reflected in their behavior.
These are shared by members of a society, and when acted upon, they produce behavior considered acceptable within that society.
Cultures are learned, largely through the medium of language, rather than inherited biologically, and the parts of a culture function as an integrated whole.
Define: Norms
A set of expectations about behaviour that people carry in their heads and use to regulate their own behaviour and respond to others ’behaviour
o Norms differ, depending on gender, occupation, age and/or life-stage
Define: Emerging Adulthood
An observed stage of life in industrialized nations that is characterized by a mix of adult and adolescent behaviours.
Define: Worldview
How we relate to each
other.
For First Nations:
-Importance of interconnectedness & balance
Explain how culture influences the social sciences and vice versa.
Consider:
o Norms differ, depending on gender, occupation, age and/or life-stage
o Those who deviate from a norm will be sanctioned
o Over half of minority clients drop out after first session
Describe McCormick and Amundson’s (1997) career-life planning model for First Nations people.
Connectedness and Wholeness as foundational.
Counsellor is more of a facilitator between person and most important people to the person.
8 areas: o Work, Life Roles and Responsibilities o Educational Background o Balance (Spiritual, Physical, Emotional, Mental needs) o Values, Meaning o Personality, Spirit o Interests o Gifts, Aptitudes, Skills o Labour Market Options
Have client reflect on themselves.
o Also have family & community members provide answers.
