Alignment of strategies at different levels.
Horizontal fit
Alignment of strategies at the same level.
Business strategy
Organization’s plan for how it will achieve its goals.
Organization structure
The means through which an organization generates the behaviours necessary to execute its business strategy.
Contingency approach to organization design
An approach to organization design based on the idea that the best type of structure for an organization depends on key contingencies of the organization (contextual variables).
Job design
The way “total task” of an organization is divided into separate jobs.
Coordination and departmentation
Organization structure that describes the methods used to coordinate the work of individual employees and subunits in an organization.
Decision-making and leadership structure
Organization structure that describes the nature/method for communication.
Control structure
Organization structure that describes the process and control of employee behaviour.
Managerial strategy
One of three structural variables-Classical, human relations, or high involvement
Contextual variables
Factors that indicate the most appropriate managerial strategy and organizational structure.
High-involvement managerial strategy
Management assumes that work can be intrinsically motivating if the organization is structured properly.
