unit 2 Flashcards
What is a Estimated Average Requirement (EAR)?
The average amount of a nutrient required for good health. If everyone in the population consumed this amount, only 50% would obtain enough of the nutrient to meet their requirements
What are dietary reference intakes (DRIs)?
Are a set of reference values for energy and nutrient intake for Canada and the US. Used to plan, promote, and assess the diets of healthy people. They do not apply to those who are ill or have adverse health conditions
what is Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA)?
Is set by adding a safety net to the EAR. About 97% of the population meets its needs by consuming this amount
What is Tolerable Upper Intake (UL) ?
Is set well above the needs of everyone in the population and represents the highest amount of nutrient that will not cause toxicity symptoms in the majority of healthy people
What is the acceptable Maccronutrient Distribution Ranges (AMDRs)?
Ranges of intake for energy-yielding nutrients, expressed as a percentage of total energy intake, that are associated with reduced risk of chronic disease while providing adequate intakes of essential nutrients.
What are Estimate Energy Requirements (EERs) ?
The amount of energy recommended by the DRI’s to maintain body weight in a healthy person based on age, gender, size, and activity level.

What is a 24 hour food recall?
A trained interviewer assists an individual to recall exactly what he/she ate the previous day More comprehensive than FFQ. Can survey large populations in a short time
Food Diary or Food Intake Record
Involves individual keeping a record of all food and drink consumed during a defined period-detailed. Foods can be weighed, measured, or estimated
Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ)
Gathers info about how often certain categories of food are consumed
Evaluates typical food intake and patterns
