1st amendment
5 guaranteed rights: freedom of religion, freedom of speech, freedom of press, freedom of assembly, freedom of petition
Created because citizens under the King’s rule were suppressed and did not have these freedoms
2nd amendment
The right to bear arms, need a well regulated militia to keep a secure state.
federalists and anti federalists argued over the military, they had just fought a revolution against an army and were wary of powerful government with a large military
4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th amendments
4th-no unlawful search and seizure without probable cause or a warrant
5th-no person can be deprived of liberties w/o due process of law
6th- right to a fair trial and a speedy and public trial
7th- right to a jury trial at federal level
8th- no cruel or unusal punishments
9th and 10th amendments
9th- the rights written in the constitution are not the only rights people have - loose interpretation
10th- all powers not listed in the constitution are left for the people and the states, national government power is limited- strict interpretation
13th, 14th, 15th amendments
13th- abolished slavery
14th- ensured all people had the same rights
15th- all men could vote with no discrimination on race
during the civil war and reconstruction era, the northern victory in the civil war led to major changes in the world that needd to be reconstructed or settled.
16th, 17th, 18th, 19th amendments
16th-progressive income tax, the more money you had the more you had to pay the gov
17th- citizens can directly elect their senators
18th- banned alcohol
19th- women have the right to vote
during the gilded age and progressive era where corruption, political corruption, high wealth, poverty and no equal rights were around.
20th, 21st, 22nd amendments
20th- lame duck period, shortened the time between the presidential election and inauguration
21st- repealed the 18th amendment, gov wanted alcohol to sell so they could tax it
22nd- limit amount of terms a president could serve to 2-because of FDR, he was reelected multiple times and the people needed a new leader
during the 1930’s/great depression era, economy was cut in half, many were without jobs,
23rd, 24th, 25th, 26th amendments
23rd- gave DC electors in the electoral college- say in presidential election
24th- eliminated poll tax and other forms of voter discrimination
25th- line of command if president dies
26th-voting age lowered from 21 to 18
