Unit 2 Flashcards
Biodiversity
Diversity of life forms in an environment. Exists on 4 scales: genetic, species, habitat, ecosystem.
Genetic Diversity
Genetic variation among individuals in a population
Bottleneck effect
Phenomenon in which a population is reduced in size due to natural disasters, habitat loss, or overhunting and rebound results in less variation.
Species
Group of organisms with distinct morphology or behavior
Species diversity
number of species in a region
Habitat diversity
variety of habitats in a ecosystem
Specialists
Only live under a narrow range of biotic or abiotic conditions
Generalists
Live under a wide range of biotic and abiotic conditions
Ecosystem diversity
Variety of ecosystems in a region
Species richness
Number of species in a region
Species evenness
Proportion of individuals within different species
Ecosystem services
Life supporting resources are produced. They must benefits humans in some way. 4 categories are provisions, regulating services, support systems, cultural services.
Provisions
goods produced by ecosystems that humans can use. Ex. cancer killing chemicals can be found in bark of some trees.
