Unit #2 Flashcards
Cell cycle
What are two reasons cells have to divide?
Too large and need to split (DNA overload), or need to replicate.
What are the stages of mitosis?
Prophase, metaphase, anaphase, telophase. (PMAT)
What are 3 examples of cells that go through the G0 phase?
Red blood cells, heart muscle cells, neuron cells.
What is the difference between chromatin and chromosomes?
Chromatin is loosely coiled and messy, Chromosomes are tightly coiled and organized.
What are the two types of tumors?
Malignant, Benign
What is it called when a cell dies intentionally.
Apoptosis.
What are three things that cause cancer?
UV Rays, tobacco smoke, Genetics/ P53.
What is angiogenisis?
When harmful cancer cells shunt all the blood supply to themselves, starving healthy cells.
What are the three most common cancer treatments?
Radiation, surgery, Chemotherapy.
What is the name of the proteins that regulate the cell cycle.
Cyclins.
Name all of the stages of the cell cycle.
G1, S, G0, G2, M phases.
What does DNA overload mean?
The cell is too large and needs to split.
What is the longest stage of mitosis?
Prophase.
What is the shortest stage of mitosis?
Anaphase.
what are nucleosomes?
DNA coiled around 8 histones.
