Adolescence
The period of life when a person is in their teens, is sexually mature, but is still dependent on his or her parents for support
Significance - a period in life with specific health and developmental needs and rights
Age of majority
In Canada, when a person becomes an adult by law at 18 years of age
Significance - Once you are at legal age you are allowed to vote, receive full minimum wage for adult workers and drink alcohol
Cohort
A grouping of people in society based on age and corresponding to fertility patterns
Significance - one of the most powerful tools researchers have to understand human health
Anticipatory Socialization
When an individual learns and practices a new role before actually adopting it
Significance - helps give individuals entry into a social group
Collectivism
The interdependence of individuals
Significance - emphasize the needs and goals of the group as a whole over the needs and desires of each individual
Emerging Adulthood
The transition from adolescence into adulthood, from 18 to 34 years old
Significance - a time between adolescents’ reliance on parents and adults’ long-term commitments to love and work
semi-dependent
A young adult who lives away from home temporarily, such as to attend university or for military service and is still receiving from his or hers parents
Distress
According to to sociologist Leonard Pearlin, stimulus that requires a psychological response
Ego
A persons identity
Significance - The ego is responsible for sorting out what is real
Identity
An individuals awareness of who he or she is and what he or she does and believes, according to psychologist Erik Erikson
Resocialization
When people make a transition to a new role, they discard old behaviors in order to adopt a new one
Significance - Having an identity can give you a sense of belonging, which is important to your well being and confidence
Rite of passage
Rituals that celebrate an individuals passage from one stage in life to the next
Significance - Ceremonies mark important transitional periods in a person’s life, such as birth, puberty, marriage, having children, and death
Self regulation
An individuals abilities to make choices about what he or she will do and what will happen to him or her
Significance - helps children and teenagers learn, to behave well, get along with others and become independent.
Socialization
The process by which people learn appropriate social role behaviors in order to participate in society
Significance - helps uphold societies and cultures; it is also a key part of individual development
Gender
The social roles that society defines as appropriate for men and women , including, traits, attitudes and behaviors
Significance - defining the power, privilege and possibilities that some people have and some people do not have in a given society.
