Clouds are classified by
Shape
Cumulus clouds
Puffy white and sometimes can tower to great heights. They are generally associated with fair weather.
Cirrus clouds
Appear fibrous, wispy, or curly. They are thin, white, high elevation, feathery clouds made of ice crystals. They are associated with changing weather.

High clouds
Found at elevations of 20 k feet or higher, some high clouds include cirrostratus, cirrocumulus, and cirrus which are all made of ice crystals.
Middle clouds
In between 6500 to 20 k feet. Consist if both water droplets and ice crystals and include clouds such as altocumulus and altostratus
Low clouds
Form at elevations below 6500 feet and are made mostly of water. Some examples of low clouds include stratus, nimbostratus, stratocumulus, and fog.
