This is the most common type of virtualization. It is the partitioning of a physical server into smaller virtual servers
Server Virtualization
This presents a software representation of the underlying hardware an operating system would typically interact with. AKA, a piece of software pretends to be hardware
Hardware Emulation
Also known as container virtualization, uses a single shared OS to host many users simultaneously
OS-Level Virtualization
An enhancement of virtualization technology in which a guest OS is recompiled prior to installation inside a virtual machine. Minimized overhead and optimizes system performance by supporting the use of virtual machines underutilized in conventional or full virtualization.
Paravirtualization
The original OS installed on a computer
Host Server Operating System
This allows us to condense multiple physical servers into one server running many virtual machines
Server Consolidation
This allows remote logon to access a specific desktop from any location with a network connection. Traditionally accessed through the use of a thin client
Client Virtualization
This is a low-cost, centrally managed computer that relies heavily on a server to accomplish most of its processing
Thin Client
Also known as terminal services or remote desktop services, this is the most mature and widely used client virtualization architecture
Presentation Virtualization
This runs on a shared infrastructure hosted in a central data center and uses similar thin client remote display technology
Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI)
Also known as distributed desktop virtualization, it retains a conventional desktop PC at the endpoint running a locally installed client hypervisor to host the desktop environment
Intelligent Desktop Virtualization (IDV)
Delivers a standard client configuration not only to users’ desktop PCs but also to all other forms of client virtualization
