Unit 1a Flashcards
A __ is a combination of software applications and an operating system that is tricked into thinking it has its own dedicated hardware
Virtual Machine
__ separates hardware and software. This offers us a much better utilization rate of server hardware while still isolating applications.
Virtualization
The computer on which the virtualized environment resides is called the __
Host Server
This is the link managing the communications between the host server and the virtualized environment. It dynamically assigns resources such as memory, disk space, and physical devices.
Hypervisor, or Virtual Machine Monitor
This is installed on a virtual computer architecture and allows for end-user interaction that is indistinguishable from a standard physical computer
Guest OS
A virtualization technology used to separate a desktop computer environment from the physical device used to access it.
Client Virtualization
The partition of a physical server into smaller virtual servers
Server Virtualization
__ is running specific software applications on central servers while separating these applications from the underlying hardware the end users are accessing. This allows multiple users to simultaneously access the same application installed on a central server.
Application Virtualization
The pooling of physical storage from multiple network storage devices into what appears to be a single storage device managed from a central console. This is commonly used in Storage Area Networks (SANs)
Storage Virtualization
A copy of a virtual machine at a given point in time
Snapshot
This term refers to reducing the cost of maintaining the number of servers the organization may have had, and is the most obvious application of virtualization.
Server Consolidation
This involves running two or more VMs on separate pieces of hardware and dividing the regular workload between them. It also protects against single point of failure issues.
Load Balancing
Utilizes virtualization software to manage a group or pool of virtualized servers
Server Pooling
This term refers to products and processes helping IT organizations respond to catastrophic situations
Disaster Recovery
This type of virtualization involves virtualized servers where virtualization software is installed directly on the machine hardware rather than on an operating system. Comes with features for resource management, high availability, and security
Bare-Metal Virtualization
