unit 1A: diffusion and dilution Flashcards
what is diffusion?
is the random movement of substance from an area of high concentration to area lower concetration
what is dilution?
adding water to a solution
why does diffusion occurs in gases in air and liquid like water?
because their particles can move around and collide with each other randomly
what is diffusion affected by ?
- the type of substance
- the tempurature
why does subtance diffuse more quickly through gases than through liquid ?
this is because the particle in a gas are more spread out and move faster than the particles in a liquid
why the hotter the gas or liquid, the faster diffusion happens ?
this is because the particle have more energy and move faster at higher tempurature
why diffusion does not happen at all in solid?
because the particle in a solid can only vibrate on spot, rather than being able to move from place to place
(bromine gas and air) what happens when the glass plate is removed?
bromine gass diffuses through the air –> random motion
(the diffusion of ammoinia and hydrogen chloride) why white ring of ammonium chloride is formed nearer the hydrogen chloride end of the tube?
because the ammonia particles travelled further.
why can ammonia can diffuse at a higher speed ?
because ammonia particle are lighter
( adding water to copper solution) why adding more water to a copper solution makes a paler shade of blue ?
becuase the blue particle will now be further apart
Hydrogen chloride gas and ammonia gas react together to form a solid compound.
What is the name of this compound?
ammonium chloride
