unit 1: states of matter Flashcards
what is a solid?
- solid are particle that are closely and regulary packed and the only -
- movement they can make is vibration
what does a solid have ?
solid has a
* fixed mass
* fixed volume
* fixed shape
* low energy
what happens when energy is supplied to a solid
- the particle vibrate faster and faster
- the force of attraction can no longer hold the particles together
- the solid melts into a liquid
what is a liquid ?
liquid has a irregular arrangement
- there is force of attraction between the particles and it tumbles over
what does a liquid have ?
- fixed mass and volume
- can take the shape of a container
what happens when a liquid is heated strongly ?
- the particle have enough energy to break the bonds
- the liquid starts to boil and turn into gas
what happens when a liquid is being cooled down?
- the energy of the particles start to slow down
- the force of attraction can hold the arrangement of partcle
- lastly, the liquid turns into a solid
what is a gas?
it is when the particles are far apart and has negligible forces of attraction between the particles
what does gas have
- fixed mass
- the volume of pressure is dependent
- takes up the shape of the container
what happens when gas is cooled
- the particles move closer and closer
- the forces of atrraction is close enought to hold them into a liquid
- the gas will condence into a liquid
what is sublimation?
sublimation is when a solid changes directly to gas
what happens when iodine gets heated?
- it sublimes into a purple gas
what happens when iodine hits the cooler part od the apparatus?
the purple gas turns back into iodine
what is deposition?
when gas changes directly to solid
what is the equation from ice –> water –> water vapour and back ?
H20(s) –> H20(I) –> H20(g)
