Regard something as being caused by someone
Attributes
We explain behavior by crediting either the situation or the person’s disposition
Attribution theory
The tendency for observers to underestimate the impact of situational factors and overestimate their behavior to personal disposition
Fundamental Attribution Error
Focusing on the argument or specifics when trying to alter someone’s opinion
Central Route Persuasion
Focusing on incidental cues that don’t truly explain the specifics when trying to alter opinion
Peripheral Route Persuasion
Agree to a small request to comply with a larger request later
Foot in the Door Phenomenon
Be asked to comply to a large request, where a small request is what is desired
Door in the face phenomenon
To reduce discomfort when two of our attitudes are inconsistent
Cognitive Dissonance Theory
Adjusting one’s behavior or thinking to coincide with a group standard
Conformity
Adjusting behavior seeking approval or avoid disproval
Normative Social Influence
Influence from one’s willingness to accept others opinions about reality
Informational Social Influence
Compliance with an order, submission to one’s authority
Obedience
Stronger responses on simple or well known tasks in the presence of others
Social facilitation
Weaker responses on simple or well known tasks in the presence of others
