Unit 13 Lesson 3 Flashcards
Physical Changes
When matter changes in a way that does not affect the type of matter
Example: sharpening a pencil
Slicing a pie 🥧
Chemical changes
Result in a change in the identity of matter
Example: when a strawberry rots
When iron rusts
When you cook an apple pie
Chemical reaction
The process in which new substances are formed during a chemical change
When the temperature goes up (increases)
The speed of a chemical change increases
Most matter expands with the exception of water which contracts
When the temperature goes down (decreases)
The speed of a chemical change decreases
Most matter contracts with the exception of water which expands
Conservation of Mass
The total mass of matter before and after a physical or chemical change remains the same
