Unit 1.3 Flashcards
What is mRNA
messenger RNA is a molecule which carries a complementary copy of the genetic code from the DNA in the nucleus to a ribosome where the protein is assembled from amino acids
Describe stage 1 of protein synthesis
The double helix DNA molecule unwinds and unzips along a gene
Describe stage 2 of protein synthesis
A complementary copy of the DNA code is made by mRNA
Describe stage 3 of protein synthesis
The mRNA separates from the DNA and leaves the nucleus through tiny holes in the nuclear membrane
Describe stage 4 of protein synthesis
The ribosome reads the mRNA strand and uses the order of the bases to produce a protein by joining amino acids together
What does DNA do
DNA carries the genetic information needed for making proteins
What are the 4 bases
Adenine - Thymine
Cytosine - Guanine
What are the base pairing rules
A always pairs with T and C always pairs with G
What is a gene
A gene is a section of DNA which codes for a protein
