unit 1.2 Flashcards
What are the 7 food groups?
- Vitamins
- Minerals
- Carbohydrates
- Protien
- Fats
- Fibre
- Water
What is the function of vitamin C?
Tissue growth and repair
What is the function of minerals (iron)?
To make haemoglobin.
What are the consequences of a diet with too much sugar?
- Type 2 diabetes
- Obesity
- Tooth decay
What are the consequences of a diet with too much fat?
- Heart disease
- Obesity
- Circulatory disease
What are the consequences of a diet with too much salt?
- Hypertension ( high blood pressure)
What solutions are used to test for starch, protien and glucose?
Starch- Iodine
Protien- Biuretes solution
Glucose- Benedicts solution
What colour will iodine go if starch is present?
It will go from brown to blue/black
What colour will benedicts solution go if glucose is present?
It will go from blue to orange.
What colour will biuretes solution go if protien is present?
It will go from blue to violet.
What is the role of the mouth in the digestive system?
- Food is chewed
- Saliva contains amylase so starch digestion starts here.
What is the role of the oesophegus in the digestive system?
- Transports food from the mouth to the stomach
What is the role of the stomach in the digestive system?
- Contains protease so it digests protien
- contains hydrochloric acid which acidifys the food.
What is the role of the small intestine in the digestive system?
- Produces carbohydrase, protease and lipase so starch, protien and fats are digested here.
products of digestion are absorbed through the walls of the small intestine and into the blood.
What is the role of the large intestine in the digestive system?
- Excess water is absorbed from food.
What is the role of the liver in the digestive system?
- Produces bile
What is the role of the Pancreas in the digestive system?
Produces carbohydrase, lipase and protease.
What is the function of bile?
- Neutralises acid from the stomach in the small intestine so enzymes can work.
- Speeds up the digestion of fats through emulsification.
What is peristalsis?
Muscles in oesophegus contract to push food down.
What is the function of villi?
Villi increase the surface area of the small intestine to help products of digestion absorb into the blood.
