Basic and Complex Emotions
shame, guilt, embarrassment, and pride
do not emerge in reaction to explicit in the same way fear, anger, and joy do

Where does envy stem from?
prosperity of others and aims to equalise the status of oneself and others, either by elevating oneself to the same level as the other (benign envy) or by lowering the other to one’s level (malicious envy)

a gift that entails a cost to the giver and serves as a benefit detector.
Positive perceptions of the benefactor
better relationship satisfaction.
Disappointment and regret stem from
the absence of a favourable result, resulting in resignation disappointment or serving as a poignant lesson for the future (regret)

empathy, originates from
mimicry and perspective-taking, heightens the sense of closeness with others - prosocial mindset
Compassion aims to
(positive or negative) aims to alleviate the suffering of others, either through empathising with suffering (negative emotion) or through a blend of suffering and comforting feelings (positive emotion)
Happiness
- denotes a subjective state of mental well-being. Individuals experiencing it perceive their lives positively
- primarily involves experiencing positive emotions and lacking negative emotion
- however, happiness also encompasses a cognitive aspect as individuals not only experience or happiness but reflect on and assess their lives to determine the progress of things
TWO CRUCIAL ASPECTS REGARDING HAPPINESS
- Subjective well-being is a process: happiness arises from actions, rather than possessions
- subjective well-being is advantageous for effective life functioning: more content individuals are, the greater their future health, work engagement, and relationship satisfactions
