Unit 1.1 Cell Biology Flashcards
What are cells?
Cells are the basic unit of all living organisms
What are the four types of cells?
Animal, plant, fungal and bacterial
What do cells contain?
Organelles
What cells in the nucleus found in?
All cells except bacterial (plant, animal and fungal)
What is the function of the nucleus?
Controls cell activities and contains genetic information
What do bacterial cells have instead of a nucleus?
A loop of genetic material plus some have extra circular plasmids
What is the function of plasmids?
Small circular DNA
Where do all chemical reactions occur?
Cytoplasm
What is the function of a cytoplasm?
Site of all chemical reactions
What is the function of the cell membrane?
Controls the movement of substances in and out of cells
How do all cells (except bacterial) gain their energy?
From aerobic respiration which occurs in the mitochondria
What is the function of the mitochondria?
Site of aerobic respiration
What is the function of the ribosomes?
Site of protein synthesis
Where are the ribosomes found?
In the cytoplasm
What cells have a cell wall?
Plant, fungal and bacterial
