Unit 10 - Alzheimers Flashcards
Plaques
Cluster of protein that builds up in between cells’neurons. Fragments mostly composed of Meta-Amyloid protein
Tangles
Neurons getting tangled. Leads to cell death.
Familial Alzheimer’s Disease
Almost always early onset, and genetics plays a great role. Genes PS1, PS2 and APP. less than 5%
Sporadic Alzheimer’s Disease
Genetic susceptibility with the gene APOE4
Sundowning
Increased behavioral problems for those with AD in the evening and during the night.
Causes that contribute to sundowning
exhaustion, upset internal clock, increased shadows, caregiver exhaustion, disorientation
Early AD symptoms
forgetfullness, difficulty learning new things, concentration, getting lost, mood shifts, communication issues, mild coordination problems, apathy
Middle Stage AD
declining concentration, confusion, disorientation to time and space, language, decision making, mood shifts, restlessness, repetitive behavior, assistance required in daily life, changes in sleep and wake cycles
Late Stage AD
Sever cognitive impairment, loss of recognizable speech, needing assistance with eating and cleaning, loss of ability to walk, impaired swallowing
Brain changes with AD
shrunken cerebral cortex, hippocampus and plaques and tangles built up between neurons
Modifiable risk factors
smoking, cholesterol, depression, exercise
