Unit 11 - Other Dementias Flashcards
Disinhibtion
a lack of restraint manifested in disregard to social conventions. (Inability to control one’s behaviours or ‘hold back’)
Aphasia
significantly impaired language or speech. Usually happens post stroke or with fronto-temporal dementia
Hallucinations
a false sensory experience
Lewy Bodies
an abnormal amount of protein bundled inside neuron cells
Chorea
an abnormal involuntary movement disorder (usually involving larger parts of the body (Huntingtons Disease) than the tremors seen in Parkinson’s disease/dementia
How dementia with Lewy Bodies and Parkinson’s Disease Dementia differ
Dementia with Lewy Bodies has more cognitive symptoms in the early stages where Parkinson’s dementia/disease has more physical and movement symptoms in early stages
How are Parkinson’s disease dementia and Huntington’s Disease are alike and how they are different
Parkinson’s disease has an onset of >65 years where Huntington’s is gene dominant and is always early onset at age 30-50 years. They are similar in the way that they both have uncontrollable movement symptoms, declines in speech and executive function/cognition and eventually memory.
