What are the characteristics of good posture?
Let arms hang loosely from the shoulders.
Back straight, lean forward slightly.
Right foot slightly forward.
Feet should be flat on the floor.
Curved fingers.
Elbows are parallel to the floor and slightly higher than the keys.
Bench must face the keyboard squarely.
Knees should be slightly under the keyboard.
Why are curved fingers important?
- Provide an arch, making it possible to cross over and under the thumb.
- Keys respond instantly.
- Each finger is the same length.
- Bring the thumb into the correct playing position.
What are the finger numbers? Which hand(s) do they apply to?
Thumb - 1
Pointer - 2
Middle - 3
Ring - 4
Pinky - 5
(applies to BOTH right and left hands)
What are the note names?
Note names (treble & bass)
CDEFGAB (in c major)
Treble Lines: E G B D F
Treble Spaces: F A C E
Bass Lines: G B D F A
Bass Spaces: A C E G
What is a Quarter Note?
Rhythm worth 1 beat of sound.
What is a Half Note?
Rhythm worth 2 beats of sound.
What does a Bar Line do?
Divides music into measures of equal duration.
What are Measures?
Sections of music divided by bar lines into segments of equal duration.
What is a Double Bar Line?
Symbol that indicates the end of a piece.
What is a Treble Clef?
Clef for the right hand notes on the piano. (Higher Pitches)
What is a Whole Note?
Rhythm worth 4 beats of sound.
What is a Bass Clef?
Clef for the left hand notes on the piano. (Lower Pitches)
What is a Grand Staff?
Both the Treble and Bass Clefs connected by a brace or bracket. Instructs the musician to play both clefs at the same time.
What is a Bracket/Brace?
Symbol that connects the treble and bass clefs to form a grand staff.
