Colony
An area of land that another country controls
Puritans
People who wanted to “purify” the English church. They wanted to simplify the Church’s ceremonies and ranks of authority
Persecution
Bad/unfair treatment usually because of religious or political beliefs
Cash crops
Crops such as tobacco, sugar, and cotton that are raised in large quantities and sold for profit.
Slave trade
The business of capturing, transporting, and selling people against their will to be used as labor
Tyranny
The unjust use of government power. A ruler who uses that type of power is a tyrant.
Parliament
The lawmaking body of England, consisting of representatives throughout the country
Democratic
- Ruled by the people
- The people elect representatives to make and carry out laws
