unit 1 topic C transition metals n' dat Flashcards
not that bad of a topic i swear
define transition metal
metals with an incomplete d-subshell in at least one of their ions
which transition metals are an exception to Aufbau’s principle
Chromium and copper
why are chromuium and copper an exception to Aufbau’s principle
because of the special stability associated with the d subshell being half filled or completely filled
what does an increase in oxidation number mean
it means that an oxidation reaction has occurred
what does a decrease in oxidation number mean
it means that a reduction reaction has occurred
what are ligands
they may be negative ions or molecules with non bonding pairs of electrons that they donate to the central metal atom or ion
define dative bond
a dative bond is a covalent bond in which both electrons come from the same atom
what can ligands be classified as
they can be classified as monodentate, bidentate all the way up to hexadentate
what is the only hexadentate ligand you will come across in advanced higher called
EDTA or if you wanna be extra ethylenediamminetetraacetate
what does a bidentate ligand have
it has 2 atoms with non bonding electron pairs available to bond to the central metal ion
define coordination number
the total number of bonds from the ligands to the central transition metal
what is the ligand name and charge for chloride
chlorido and 1-
what is the ligand name and charge for oxide
oxido and 2-
what is the ligand name and charge for cyanide
cyanido and 1-
