Unit 1-Toolkit Flashcards
What is geography?
Geography is the study of . . .
The earths surface and the processes that shape it
Places and their connections to other places
Relationships between people and environments
What should a good map include?
1) A title that: Clearly states what the map is showing Is clearly visible Is underlined once in red 2) A legend that: Is clearly visible (in one of the corners) Is drawn with a ruler Includes all items shown on the map Boxes should be rectangular 3) A direction indicator Compass rose pointing north 4) Labels that are: Printed in black or blue ink Written horizontally Contain no spelling errors 5) Colouring that is: Neat (erase all planning lines) Solid (no patterns) Appropriate Choose colours that suit what you are showing Use blue for water only Avoid large areas of brown or black City's should be indicated with a red circle
What are the directions for a 16 compass rose?
N NNE NE ENE E ESE SE SSE S SWS WS WSW W WNW NW NWN
What direction would you be travelling if you go from Charlottetown, PEI to Rimouski, QC.
NW
What direction would you be travelling if you go from Manitoba to Saskatchewan?
W
What direction would you be travelling if you go from Canada to the United States?
S
What is latitude?
Parallels of latitude are a series of circles that surround the globe.
They are used to determine locations north (N) or south (S) of the equator.
The equator is the line at 0 latitude.
It divides the earth into halves: the northern hemisphere and the Southern Hemisphere.
What is longitude?
Meridians of longitude circle the globe by passing through both poles.
The prime meridian occurs at 0 longitude and passes through the town of Greenwich, England.
Meridians determine the location east (E) or west (W) of the prime meridian.
The meridian at 180 is called the international date line.
Together, the prime meridian and the international date line divide the earth into halves: the eastern hemisphere and the Western Hemisphere.
What are the important line of longitude and latitude?
Equator-0 degrees
North Pole- 90 degrees north
South Pole- 90 degrees south
Tropic of Cancer- 23 and a half degrees north
Tropic of Capricorn- 23 and a half degrees south
Arctic circle- 66 and a half degrees north
Antarctic circle- 66 and a half degrees south
Prime meridian- 0 degrees
International date line- 180 degrees
How many time zones are in Canada?
6 time zones
Are time zones based on lines of longitude or latitude?
Longitude
What happens when you move east?
You gain time
What happens if you move west?
You lose time.
Calculate the time difference for Washington and Los Angeles.
3 hours
Calculate the time difference for Toronto and London, England.
5 hours
Calculate the time difference for Winnipeg and Vancouver
2 hours
What are Canada’s time zones?
Pacific Standard Mountain standard Central standard Eastern standard Atlantic standard Newfoundland standard *know placements on map
What is the alpha-numeric ford number for the triangle, circle and happy face. Look at grid*
Triangle= B5
Circle= E2
Happy face= A2
What is the military fried reference for A, B, A, D, E, F, G and H?
*look at grid
A: 83 16 B: 86 14 C: 86 17 D: 85 12 E: 875 135 F: 840 143 G: 887 153 H: 875 168
What are the 3 types of scales?
- Direct statement
- Line scale
- Representative fraction
The direct statement scale on the map is 1cm= 5km. The distance (on the map) between two cities is measured at 2.3cm. How far apart are those cities in reality (in km)?
2.3x5=11.5km apart
The distance on a globe, from point A to point B is 7.5cm. The scale is 1:42 000 000. How far apart are these two points in reality (in km)?
1 = 7.5 42 000 000 X 1x= 7.5 x 42 000 000 1x= 315 000 000 X= 315 000 000 X X=3150km
The distance from Toronto to Montreal is 2.6cm on a map with a scale of 1:19 000 000. How far apart are these two cities.
1 = 2.6 19 000 000 X 1x= 2.6x 19 000 000 1 x= 2.6x 19 000 000 1x = 49 400 000 1x= 49 400 000 1 X= 49 400 000 X= 494km
How do you calculate travel time?
Time= distance
Speed
Travelling at an average speed of 80km/h. How long would it take to travel from Toronto to Montreal?
T= distance Speed T= 494km 80 T= 6.18/h
What are features in a topographical map?
Natural features: Elevation (e.g. Contour lines) Hills and valleys Rivers and lakes Human features: Roads Houses Bridges Railways
When would you use a 4 digit grid reference and when would you use a 6-digit grid reference?
You would use a 4-digit grid reference if the area of the thing you were trying to coordinate was to large. You would use a 6-digit if the place or thing was smaller.
What are the provinces/territories and their capitals
*know where they are on the map
Yukon Territory- Whitehorse Northwest Territories- Yellowknife Nunavut- Iqaluit British Columbia- Victoria Alberta- Edmonton Saskatchewan- Regina Manitoba- Winnipeg Ontario- Ottawa Quebec- Quebec City New Brunswick- Fredricton Nova Scotia- Halifax Newfoundland and Labrador- St.John's Prince Edward Island- Charlottetown

What is topographical map?
A two dimensional representation of a small area of the earth’s surface using symbols.
