Unit 1 Theories Flashcards
1
Q
Daltons Atomic Theory
A
- Each element is composed of indestructible atoms
- All atoms of a given element have the same mass and other properties that distinguish them from the atoms of other elements
- Atoms combine in simple, whole-number ratios to form compounds
2
Q
Nuclear Theory of an Atom
A
- Most of the atoms mass and all of its positive charge are combined in a small core called the nucleus
- Most of the volume of the atom is empty space through which tiny, negatively charged electrons are dispersed
- There are as many negatively charged electrons outside the nucleus as there are positively charged particles (proton) inside the nucleus, so that the atom is electrically neutral
3
Q
3 main properitoes of electrons
A
they carry a negative
they are smaller and lighter than protons and neutrons
they are uniformly present in many different substances
