Unit 1 : The Chemistry of Water Flashcards
an aggregation of atomic nuclei and electrons that is sufficiently stable to possess observable properties
molecule
the tendency for water molecules to stick together.
Cohesion
The cohesive forces between water molecules are responsible for the phenomenon known as
Surface Tension
the bonding of a water molecule to another substance, such as the sides of a leaf’s veins.
Adhesion
is a homogeneous mixture of two or more substances
Solution
only one phase; no part is separated by another by a detectable boundary.
Homogeneous
dissolved substance; present in smaller amount
Solute
dissolving medium; present in greater amount
Solvent
amount of solute that can be dissolved in a given amount of solvent at a specific temperature; usually expressed as grams of solute per 100 grams of solvent
Solubility
substance that dissolves in the solvent
Soluble
substance that does not dissolve in the solvent
Insoluble
dissolve in any amount in each other
Miscible
have limited solubility in each other
Partially Miscible
do not dissolve in each other and forms two separate layers upon mixing
Immiscible
a solution that can still take more of the solute in addition to what it already contains; less concentrated than a saturated solution
Unsaturated solution
