What does SEN stand for?
Special educational needs
What is inclusive practice?
s an approach to teaching that recognises the diversity of students, enabling all students to access course content, fully participate in learning activities and demonstrate their knowledge and strengths at assessment.
Advantages of a narrative method
Needs no prep, can observe all areas of development, can observe more than one area of development at once
Disadvantages of narrative method
Can be hard to write down everything quickly, observer may have to keep stopping to write down everything, can be hard to record accurately and without judgement
Advantages of checklist and tick chart
Easy to fill in and can be completed quickly, can be repeated to see progression, keeps the observer specific skills to focus on
Disadvantages of checklist and tick chart
Different observers may come to different conclusions, does not show how quickly or confidently a child completed a task
Advantages of event sample
Can pick up patterns or triggers for behaviours, can be used to check that strategies are working
Disadvantages of event sample
Adults may not be there to see what caused the event, adults may forget to fill in the sheet promptly
Advantages of time sample
Show what children are doing over a long period of time than a narrative, can be used to look at different aspects of a child’s development
Disadvantages of time sample
The observer has to keep an eye on the time, an event may be missed if it’s not in the “time slot”, the observer has to be organised and prepare a sheet
Advantages of sociogram
Can be useful to find out more about children’s friendships and who they play with, useful with older children who may be playing out of sight of adults
Disadvantages of sociogram
Can be unreliable, can only be with older children
