unit 1 seccession/general facts Flashcards
seccession
sequential changes in a community in a specific area over long periods of time.
primary seccession
the process starts when there is no soil present
secondary seccession
the process starts when soil is present but the vegitation was removed by a disturbence (shovel, digging, deer)
pioneer species
a specific type of organism that is among the first to colonize an area during succession.
organic compounds
molecules that have carbon atoms and they are darived from living things
types of organic compounds
carbohydrates, proteins, lipids(fats, oils, waxes), nucleic acids(DNA, RNA), vitamins
producer (autograph)
organism that uses solar or chemical energy to make organic compounds from inorganic parts of the environment
consumer
oranisms that get their organic compounds by eating the tissue of other organisms
decomposer
an organism that eats detritus (waste)
detritus
dead organisms that shed parts of living organisms and the waste of living organisms
energy/matter
can never be created or destroyed but can change from one form to another
types of energy
kinetic (movement)
potential (chemical, stored)
nuclear
solar (light)
heat
sound
matter
atoms are never destroyed but they can move from 1 molecule to another
biogeochemical cycle
“life earth atoms move”
Folows one specfic type of atom (except the water cycle)
photosynthesis
sunlight + 6H2O + 6CO2 -> C6H12O6 + 6O2
