agree with cohen and say there are 5 stages of a moral panic - concern, hostility, consensus, disproportionality, volatility.
functionalist approach
how does ferudi say moral panics arise.
moral panics arise when society fails to adapt to dramatic social changes. Moral panics reflect wider concerns that older people hold to the nature of society. Older gen believes the media is the reason for anloss of traditional norms and values.
marxist/neo marxist approach
how do moral panics benifit capitalism according to hall et al.
Ruling class defines what deviance is and then decides who the folk devils are. Eg seminal policing crisis 1970- black muggers. Report about others things to distract them from being exploited and reality.this gave r/c a scapegoat.
postmodernist approach
how are moral panics less likely to occur according to waiton.
contemporary society creates a range of fears and panics that are different to classic ones. Mp are less likely to occur because societies no longer have a strong central moral code.- We live in a norm breaking society where moral panics cant occur.
