Unit 1: Replication Of DNA Flashcards
5’ - 3’
The direction in which a strand of DNA is elongated.
DNA Replication
The copying of a molecule of DNA.
Template Strand
The strand of DNA which is copied to produce a new strand.
Primer
The small sequence of a single strand of DNA required to start DNA Replication.
Semi-conservative
The method that is used by a cell to replicate DNA to produce two daughter DNA molecules, each containing one original and one new strand of DNA.
Leading Strand
The DNA strand that is continuously replicated.
Lagging Strand
The DNA strand that is replicated in fragments.
Ligase
The enzyme that is require to join a newly replicated fragment.
Replication Forks
The point at which the DNA strands are unzipped for DNA replication to take place.
DNA Polymerase
The enzyme that adds free complementary DNA nucleotides during the replication of DNA.
Heat-tolerant DNA Polymerase
The enzyme from hot-Spring Bacteria, used in PCR.
Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR)
A method used to amplify sequences of DNA in vitro
3’ - 5’
The direction of DNA template for DNA replication
