Unit 1 Pt 2 Flashcards
Theory
A set of facts and relationships between facts that can explain and predict related phenomena
Hypothesis
Proposed explanation for a situation “if A happens B will be the result”
The scientific Method
- Observe behavior or other phenomena–>
- Formulate a research question–>
- Generate a testable prediction that addresses the question–>
- Collect and analyze data–>
- Draw conclusions and use them to create/redefine theories
Surverys
Nonexperimental method
Allow you to ask large numbers of people questions about attitudes and behavior
Correlational study
Measure the direction and strength of the relationship between two variables
Third variable problem
Third variables can be responsible for the correlation we observe in the other two variables
Experimental study
Manipulate one variable and observe changes in others
Independent Variable
the cause
Dependent variable
The effect
The placebo effect
A placebo is a treatment that contains nothing known to be helpful but that still produces benefits because the person receiving treatment believes it will be beneficial
Experimental bias
The unintentional effect that researchers may exert on their results
Quasi experiments
Experimental design where we are missing some parts of traditional experimental design
