Oceans
a large body of water.
Mountains
a large natural elevation in the Earth’s surface known to create a natural barrier
Rivers
a large natural stream of water that leads to lakes usually.
Islands
a piece of land surrounded by water.
Lake
Body of freshwater surrounded by land.
Plains
an area of flat, grassy land
Peninsula
Body of water surrounded on three sides
Non-Contiguous
Not in close proximity and not touching.
Latitude
imaginary horizontal lines drawn on maps that indicate north/south direction
Longitude
imaginary vertical lines drawn on maps that indicate east/west direction
Compass Rose
usually located near the map key and gives the reader a reference point for the orientation of the maps.
Map key
includes the title of the map and the symbols with their meaning
