Unit 1 - Photoreception Flashcards
Sclera
Tough, white, fibrous protective layer.
Cornea
Transparent portion of sclera, where light enters, refracts (bends) light rays.
Choroid
Contains blood vessels supplying cells of the eye.
Iris
Coloured part of the eye.
Pupil
In the centre of the IRIS. Iris constricts/dilated to control size of pupil.
Lens
Refracts light to focus image.
Ciliary Muscles
Contract/relax to change shape of lens to change focal distance.
Retina
Contains photoreceptors (Rods & Cones).
Rods
Black & White / night vision.
Cones
Colour Vision, fine details.
Aqueous & Vitreous Humour
Maintain eye shape. Also provides nutrients to some cells & refract light.
Accommodation
Far Away Objects: Ciliary muscles relax, lens flatten.
Near Objects: Ciliary muscles contract, lens becomes rounded.
Signal
Photoreceptors –> Optic Nerve –> Thalamus –> Occipital lobe.
–>Info from left eye goes to right occipital lobe.
–> Info from right eye goes to left occipital lobe.
Blind Spot
Where optic nerves connects to the retina, no photoreceptors.
–> BINOCULAR VISION: each eye convers the blind spot for the other eye.
