Unit 1 Oxidisng And Reducing Agents Flashcards
What does a oxidising agent do?
Cause oxidation reactions to take place
They gain electrons from other atoms/ions
Is itself reduced whilst it oxidises another substance
What does a reducing agent do?
Loses electrons to another element/ion
Is itself oxidised while it reduces another substance
Where are the best reducing/oxidising agents in electrochemical series
Top right-best reducing
Bottom left-best oxidising
Why are the strongest reducing agents alkali metals?
Have low electronegativity and lose electrons very easily
Why are the strongest oxidising agents halogens?
Have high electronegatives and gain electrons very easily
Name a example of an oxidising agent which is not a element
Group ions such as dichromate(Cr2O4-) is a strong oxidising agent in acidic solutions
Hydrogen peroxide(H2O2)
Name a example of a reducing agent which is not a element?
Carbon monoxide(CO)
What turns into a ion and atom?
Ions gains electrons to become atoms
Atoms lose electrons to become ions
How do u complex ion electron equation?
Balance atoms that are already present
If num of O2 needs balanced add same number of H2O to opposite side
Add twice num of H ions as H2O to other side
Complete equation by adding total number of electrons needed to balance overall electrical charge
