Unit 1 - Motion Flashcards
What is weight?
A force that acts towards the centre of the Earth
What do all forces have?
A magnitude and a direction
What are forces measured in?
Newton’s (N)
What are vector quantities
Quantities that have both a direction and size
What type of quantities are forces
Vector
What are scalar quantities
Quantities that don’t have a direction
Giv e5 examples of scalar quantities
Mass, speed, energy, distance and time
What is the displacement
The distance covered in a straight line and has a direction
What is the velocity
The speed in a particular direction
What is acceleration
A measure of how fast the velocity is changing
What does the speed of an object tell you?
How quickly is travels in a certain distance.
What is the instantaneous speed?
The speed at a particular point in a journey
What is the word equation for the average speed
Average speed = distance/time
What is the symbol for distance?
X
What can be used to make the results of the speed of a fast moving object more accurate
A light gate
What is the typical speed for walking
1.4m/s
What is the typical speed for a train
55 m/s
What can a distance/time graph represent
A journey
How can the speed be calculated using a distance/time graph
Calculating the gradient (rise over run)
What does a straight sloping line show in a distance/time graph?
The object is traveling at a constant speed
What type of quantity is acceleration?
Vector
Why are the units of acceleration metres per second per second?
Because acceleration tells you the change in velocity in each second.
What are the units for acceleration
m/s^2
What does an acceleration of 10 m/s^2 mean
That each second, the velocity increases by 10m/s
What is the word equation for acceleration
Acceleration= change in velocity/ time taken
What is the symbol equation for acceleration
a = v - u / t
What do v and u stand for
v = final velocity u = initial velocity
What is deceleration
When the acceleration is a negative value meaning that it slows down.
What is the symbol equation relating acceleration, distance, starting and final velocity
v^2 - u^2 = 2 x a x X
What is the value of acceleration due o gravity?
10m/s^2
How do you find the acceleration of an object using a velocity/time graph
Calculating the gradient
What does the velocity time graph show when the line goes below the axis?
The object is moving in the opposite direction.
How do you work out the distance that an object has travelled using a velocity time graph?
Calculating the area beneath the line
