Unit 1 List 2 Experimental Design Flashcards
claim
statements made in science based on an experiment.
constant
The factors that do not change during the experiment.
evidence
information, facts or data supporting (or contradicting) a claim, assumption or hypothesis
Experimental bias
the unintentional influence of the experimenter’s expectations, beliefs, or preconceived notions on the outcome of a study or research experiment.
experimental control
an element that remains unchanged or unaffected by other variables.
experimental procedure
the manner in which an experiment is carried out.
Hypothesis
A statement about a specific research question, and it outlines the expected result of the experiment.
Manipulated variable
a factor that is purposefully and specifically changed by the experimenter.
Qualitative data
data representing information and concepts that are not represented by numbers.
Quantitative data
data represented numerically, including anything that can be counted, measured, or given a numerical value
Reason
the ability to recognize and understand the scientific method, concepts, processes, and applications used in the pursuit of knowledge.
Responding variable
what the scientist measures as a result of the test variable.
Scientific method
a way of solving problems that uses a set of steps to make sure your answer is accurate and based on evidence.
Scientific model
a physical and/or mathematical and/or conceptual representation of a system of ideas, events or processes.
Scientific question
ask about specific objects, organisms, or events in the world, and can be answered by experiment through measuring and analyzing data.
Scientific theory
an explanation for why things work or how things happen
Trends in data
general directions of data
Valid experiment
must test the hypothesis
