Unit 1- Intro & Matter Flashcards
Distillation
Liquids are separated by boiling point; one liquid is turned to vapor, collected, and condensed back to liquid.
Chromatography
Distributing a mixtures component between two phases (stationary and mobile)
Filtration
separates solids from liquids in a heterogeneous mixture.
Sifting
Separating solid materials by size.
Flotation
Separates materials that float from those that don’t.
Magnetism
Separates magnetic materials from nonmagnetic materials.
2 different classifications of matter
Pure substances, mixtures
2 different types of Pure Substances
Elements- on periodic table can’t be changed into simpler substances.
Compounds-Two or more types of elements chemically combined.
2 different types of mixtures
Homogeneous- Evenly mixed, can’t be visually distinguished, can be broken down.
Heterogeneous-Not uniform throughout, substances can be visually distinguished, may contain larger particles that settle.
Homogeneous
Evenly mixed, can’t be visually distinguished, can be broken down.
Heterogeneous-
Not uniform throughout, substances can be visually distinguished, may contain larger particles that settle.
Physical Property
can be observed/ measured without changing the composition of the substance Ex. malleability, freezing point, luster, ductility
Chemical Property
can only be observed by changing the composition of the substance.
ex. Reactivity, combustibility
Physical Change
transformation that does not change the composition of the substance.
ex. cutting stretching, melting..
Chemical Change
transformation that changes the composition of the substance
-result of a chemical reaction
-signs of a chemical change: change in temp or color, production of gas or solid
