Unit 1- Intestine Flashcards
Atresia Coli
No rectum, occurs in pig and holstein calves
Atresia
Narrowing or absence of body orifice
Most common intestinal anomaly
Atresia coli
Congenital anomalies of intestine
Usually involve the lumen
Atresia Ani
No anus
Atresia Ani Survival
Recto-vaginal fistula, cranial to anus will be megacolon and prominent cecum
Lethal White Syndrome
Congenital colonic aganglionosis, no parasympathetic ganglia in colon, poorly developed, meconium impaction
Meconium
First green poo as neonate
Lethal White Syndrome Genetics
White paint horses carriers, white foals are affected
Enterolith
Lamellae of struvite deposit around foreign body nucleus in horse
Parascaris equorum
Intestinal impaction in foal, dilatation will occur cranial to obstruction
Rectal Stricture
Vasculitis from Salmonella typhimurium or penetrating wound in pigs will lead to scar and stricture
Hernia
Displacement of an organ through abnormal opening
Internal Hernia
Rare, intestines displaced through foramina WITHIN abdominal cavity
Internal Hernia Causes
Epiploic foramen or tear in omentum/mesentery
External Hernia
DIsplacement of viscera outside abdominal cavity
Hernial Contents
Displaced viscera
Hernial Sac
Pouch formed by peritoneum and skin
Hernial Ring
Opening through which viscera is displaced
Eventration
Displaced contents not within sac, can be traumatic, leads to sepsis and venous infarct due to mesenteric compression
Diaphragmatic Hernia
Liver and small intestine through diaphragm, common in cat
Scrotal Hernia
Displacement of intestines through inguinal canal to scrotum, complication of castration and can lead to incarceration
Incarceration
Intestines can get stuck in hernia
Umbilical Hernia
Can fluctuate in size until intestine is strangulated
