Unit 1 - Human Genome Key Area 6 Flashcards
Key Area 5
What is a Personal Genome Sequence
A personal genome sequence is a complete set of the person’s DNA bases. This can be analysed to predict the likelihood of developing certain diseases.
What is Personalised Medicine
Knowledge and analysis of an individual’s genome may lead to personalised medicine where a genome sequence can be used to select the most effective drugs to treat their disease.
What is Pharmacogenetics
Pharmacogenetics is the study of how genes affect a person’s response to drugs therefore can help with choice of drugs.
It studies the effects of pharmaceutical drugs on the genetically diverse members of the human population.
What is the Human Genome
The human genome, is the complete set of hereditary information found in DNA
What is the Human Genome made up of
It is made up of genes that carry the instructions to make proteins. The genome is also made up of other DNA sequences that do not code for proteins.
What is Genomic sequencing
Genomic sequencing is the study of the human genome where the sequence of nucleotide bases is determined for individual genesor evenentire genomes.
What is Genomic sequencing used for
It can be used to find out about individual genes and be able to relate this information about genes to their function.
How does genomic sequencing work
Genomic sequencing uses computer programs to identify base sequences by looking for sequences similar to known genes.
What is Bioinformatics
The data is then compared using computers and statistical analysis.
The process of genomic sequencing, computer and statistical analysis is called bioinformatics
