Hyperbole
Obvious, intended exaggeration.
Juxtaposition
Comparing 2 unrelated or opposite things. The effect of this can be surprising, witty or startling.
Comparison
Made w/ or without “like” or “as” (aka “metaphor” or “simile”)
Oxymoron
The combination of two words of opposite meaning. Used for dramatic, comedic or provocative effect.
Parallelism
Several parts of a sentence OR several sentences expressed in similar grammatical form with the equal use of balance, rhythm and emphasis to ideas through syllables. This is often used to demonstrate that the ideas or topics shown are equivalent in importance.
Personification
A type of metaphor when non-human concepts, animals or objects are given human characteristics, habits or qualities.
Anaphora (form of repetition)
Repetition at the beginning of a line ot sentence
Epistrophe (form of repetition)
Repetition at the end of a line or sentence
Rhetorical Question
A question that does not require an anseer and is simply posed for effect.
Understatement
A statement saying less than what is truly meant and is often used for comedic effect.
Verbal Irony
A starement that expresses the opposite of the actual or literal meaning of the words.
