4 Functions of Management
Leading, planning, organizing, and controlling
Planning:
A managerial process of setting directions and objectives for the organization
Organizing:
Sets plans into action through the coordinates of people/resources
Controlling:
Involves checks and guides to ensure things turn out as planned
Leading:
Related directly to the people in an organization. Communicating visions, building enthusiasm, and motivating staff in order to reach goals, and follow plans.
Levels of Management
Managers exist in all organizations, and they work with a wide variety of job titles across different organizations. Ex. Department manager, production supervisor, team lead, principal, CEO, administrator, dean
Managers
Are those that supervise, support, and direct the work efforts of others within an organization OR a person who supports, activates, and is responsible for the work of others.
Front line managers are also known as project managers.
Manage coordinators, assistants, interns, and is the first level you would typically get into.
Middle managers are also known as functional managers.
In charge of areas such as marketing, finance, operations, or human resources.
Top level managers are also known as general managers.
Guide the overall performance of an organization. Create long-term goals, assess risk, and ensure objectives are aligned with the organization’s mission.
Management Skills
Technical, HR, and Conceptual skills
Technical Skills
Required by the front line. These are hands-on, task oriented skills that relate to the overall project/objective.
Human Relation Skills (Interpersonal skills)
Refers to how well we interact with others. Can we engage, motivate, and communicate effectively with others?
Conceptual Skills
This skills requires visioning, decision-making and more strategic skills
