-Now eliminated, served as interim phase as wines transitioned from VdP to AOC status. All wines that had VDQS status were upgraded to AOC category or downgraded to IGP.

Vin de Pays/IGP

A

Indication Geographique Protegee
-1979 VdP created, gives more flexibility around grape growing and winemaking regulations.
-2009 renamed to IGP, tighter restrictions and more rigorous control with certification process for traceability from vineyard to bottle. Regulated by INAO (Institut National des Appellations d’Origine) (formally part of France AgriMer along with Vins de Table)
Rules of IGP:
-Operate within specified zone of production
-Made from list of authorised grape varieties
-Min. alcohol level
-Tasting panel approval
