Unit 1 Exp Design EJR Flashcards
Testable-Question
A Testable-Question is a question that can be answered through experiments
Non-testable- Question
A question that can not be answered with an experiment
Quantitative
measuring something by how many rather than quality
Qualitative
Measuring something on how good the quality is.
Trials
Experiments to test quality, value, or usefulness.
Observation
noticing and understanding info from a primary source
Empirical evidence
gaining info through observing and documenting certain behavior and patterns
Data
facts and statistics collected together
Models in science
a model that has something to do with science
Analogy
a comparison between 2 scientific concepts
Prototype
used as the standard of measurement for the product
Hypothesis
a bias made with limited info used as a starting point
Variable
any factor, trait, or condition that can be different amounts or types
Procedure
the official way of doing something
Precision
how close they are but not how correct they are
Accuracy
how correct but not how close
Scientific method
the way of doing things in the correct order
Control
an element that is unchanged and stays the same and is not effected by the other variables
Constant
the factors that don’t change
Predict
a outcome of a scientific test based on logical reason about a scientific idea
Infer
drawing conclusions based on evidence and reasoning
Independent variable
the variable that can be changed and manipulated
Manipulated variable
a factor that is meant to be changed by the experiment
Dependent variable
the variable that stay the same
Responding variable
factor that is measured as a result of the effects of the manipulated variable
Sample size
a small amount of something
Validity
how accurate a method measures what it is intended to measure
Trends in data
the general change in a variable with time
Variability
not being consistent
Weight
the quantity of matter contained by it/how heavy something is
Correlation
how something goes together/ how they connect/correlate
mass
measure of amount of material it contains
Volume
amount of space that a substance or object occupies
Percent
by a specified amount in or for every hundred.
rate
a measure, quantity, or frequency, typically one measured against some other quantity or measure.
ratio
the quantitative relation between two amounts showing the number of times one value contains or is contained within the other.
Line graph
a display of info that changes and is connected with a line
bar graph
its a graph that displays info in numerical values by height or length
scatter plot
a graph that shows values of two variables plotted along two axes the pattern of the resulting points showing any correlation
pie graph
a graph that is usually made of percentages
claim
a generalization based on a reported statistically significant effect
evidence
information collected by scientific methods that can change their belief in the truth
reason
why you believe that something happened
bias
what someone believes and what the truth is
theory
an explanation of an aspect of the natural world that can include laws, hypotheses and facts.
