Unit 1 - Energy Systems Flashcards
Where does the energy come from during repeated muscle contraction?
From breaking down Creatine Phosphate:
Creatine Phosphate + ADP Creatine + ATP
State how long does the Creatine phosphate process support muscle activity?
Approximately 10 seconds, then it runs out
What happens during strenuous muscle activity?
Creatine Phosphate is broken down, releasing energy and phosphate, which convert ADP to ATP
Explain Anaerobic Respiration…
The only stage in Anaerobic Respiration is Glycolysis (Oxygen is required for the other two).
Explain what is meant by oxygen debt…
When there is an inadequate oxygen supply to complete Aerobic Respiration, thus Anaerobic Respiration must occur
What happens if strenuous muscle activity continues even though the Creatine Phosphate has run out?
Anaerobic Respiration occurs due to the inadequate supply of oxygen
