Unit 1: Diversity of Living Things Flashcards
What is BINOMIAL NOMENCLATURE?
- A system to denote species
- Genus species
- Written in italics
What is BIODIVERSITY?
- Biodiversity is the diversity in living things
- It is crucial to creating healthy ecosystems that support all life on Earth
What does it mean to be UNICELLULAR?
An organism is made up of one cell (e.g. archea and bacteria)
What does it mean to be MULTICELLULAR?
An organism is made up of many cells (e.g. plantae and animalia)

PROKARYOTIC vs EUKARYOTIC
PROKARYOTIC
- Always unicellular
- No nucleus or membrane bound organelles
- Smaller
- Simpler
- Circular DNA
EUKARYOTIC
- Often multicellular
- Nucleus and membrane bound organelles
- Larger
- Complex
- Linear DNA
BOTH HAVE:
- DNA
- Cytoplasm
- Plasmic membranes
- Ribosomes
What is a SPECIES?
A group of organisms that can reproduce naturally with one another and create fertile offspring
- freely interbreeding
What is an ORGANISM?
Any living thing that functions as an individual - displays all properties of life
AUTOTROPH vs HETEROTROPH
AUTOTROPHS (producers) make their own food, HETEROTROPHS (consumers) do not
