Where did the word “victim” originally come from?
Ancient sources … a victim was a person or an animal put to death in order to appease some supernatural power or diety.
In modern terms, what does the word “victim” mean?
Individuals or groups who suffer injuries, losses, or hardships for any reason
Define victimization
- An asymmetrical interpersonal relationship that is abusive, painful, destructive, parasitical, and unfair
- Takes on aspects of predator and prey, winner and loser, victor and vanquished
Define victimology
- Scientific study of the physical, emotional, and financial harm people suffer because of illegal activities
- Victimologists study how victims are handled by police, the courts, legal staff, probation officers, and judges
- They research what happens to victims and the harm they suffer
What is a direct or primary victim?
Those who experience the criminal act and its consequences first hand
What are secondary or indirect victims?
- Family members, friends, etc. who are not immediately involved in the crime, but are drawn into the situation anyhow
- This can include police, fire fighters, first responders, ER staff, etc.
What is the subjective approach to the plight of victims?
Approaching issues from the standpoint of morality, ethics, philosophy, personalized reactions, intense emotions.
What is the objective approach?
- The objective approach is the hallmark of good science
- Objectivity means not taking sides, showing favouritism, and not allowing personal prejudices to interfere
